Malocclusions
Orthodontic anomalies are quite prevalent and can be successfully treated with the proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Malocclusions may be of dental, dentoalveolar and/or skeletal origin. Following are characteristic examples of those 3 categories.
Crowding
Spacing
Open bite
Deep bite(Increased overlapping of upper and lower incisors – traumatic occlusion)
Increased overjet(Distance of upper and lower incisors, protruding anterior teeth)
Tooth number anomalies(Congenitally missing teeth, supernumerary teeth)
Crossbite(Anterior/posterior, when one or more upper teeth occlude lingual to the lower teeth)
Ectopic eruption
Impacted teeth(Usually upper canines, teeth that remain within the bone and cause complex dental and orthodontic problems)
Periodontal migration(mainly affecting adult patients)
Skeletal Class II(mandibular retrognathism with or without protruding upper incisors)
Skeletal Class III(maxillary retrusion and/or mandibular protrusion)
